Academics

ºÚÁÏÍø911Madrid: Study in the historic center of Spain’s capital near Puerta de Sol, conveniently located near shops, cafés, tapas bars, theaters, museums, copy centers, and metro stations. ºÚÁÏÍø911Madrid features five classrooms, a student lounge, an academic advising office, and a student life office.

The Fundación Ortega-Marañón (FOM) is a prestigious private institution established in 1978 in Madrid offering undergraduate study abroad programs in both Spanish and English. Courses for US college students are held in a modern facility in the lively La Latina district and include a variety of subjects, with strengths in psychology and computer science. FOM is also home to a renowned postgraduate research center affiliated with the Complutense University of Madrid. The FOM is named after the renowned 20th century Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset.

Universidad Antonio Nebrija (UAN) is internationally recognized and has offered Spanish language course instruction since 1985. The UAN academic calendar aligns with the U.S. semester calendar, and students attend classes on the Madrid, Princesa campus. The campus is quiet and centrally located in Madrid. It has excellent connections by public transport and is 15-20 minutes from the Puerta de Sol train station of Madrid city center.

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) was established in 1989 and is recognized as Spain’s most prestigious public institution of higher education. It follows a U.S. academic calendar system for US visiting college students and has one of the highest percentages of full-time and tenured female faculty in Spain. ºÚÁÏÍø911students take classes on the Getafe campus, which is the main UC3M campus, located 25-40 minutes outside of downtown Madrid via efficient and modern public transit. Depending on your housing location, your commute time to campus can vary from 40-to-70 minutes by public transportation because UC3M classrooms are located outside of Madrid’s city center.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by ºÚÁÏÍø911in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the ºÚÁÏÍø911academic calendar.

GPA

For CIEE, UAN, and FOM courses, students must meet a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and ºÚÁÏÍø911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

Courses at CIEE, UC3M, UAN, and FOM typically include lectures, discussions, critical analysis of readings, case studies, audio-visual documents, field trips, and require active participation from the students. Language courses privilege work by tasks and group collaboration. Active participation of students is required given the communicative approach of these courses.

Students at UC3M should expect to maintain an active academic schedule. Class attendance is mandatory, and coursework and exams are to be completed as assigned, and on schedule. UC3M courses in business, management, and computer science are very competitive to get into. Class schedules vary depending on your class group sections; they are offered anywhere from Monday to Friday. When choosing university courses, note that local students begin to study one area right away; they do not take general or core courses. ºÚÁÏÍø911students should not enroll in upper-level courses for subjects not previously studied in college. UC3M courses run from early September until early mid-to-late December in the fall, and from late January to late May in the spring. Early departure is not allowed. ºÚÁÏÍø911students take their UC3M final exams in December during the fall semester and in late May and early June during the spring semester.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

FOM and UAN classes are typically scheduled Monday through Thursday. ºÚÁÏÍø911classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday and exceptionally have at least one Friday class. Students should expect to have daily homework assignments and weekly quizzes.

UC3M courses typically meet twice a week and run Monday through Friday. Instruction includes lectures and practice groups. The UC3M class size averages 25-80 students.

Class sessions at UAN are typically 90 minutes each from Monday to Thursday. Class size varies from 20 to 45 study abroad students from US colleges only.

Students enrolled at FOM take 90 minutes of class sessions from Monday to Thursday. Class size varies from 10 to 30 study abroad students from US colleges only.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions†that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other ºÚÁÏÍø911courses begin or end.

Grading

In language classes, students are normally graded on weekly quizzes, exams, attendance, homework assignments, oral presentations, and class participation. Grades in the content courses are based on class participation, a mid-term exam, research papers, oral presentations, and a final exam. Each instructor determines the exact breakdown of grades. Attendance is mandatory and absences affect final grades.

Students enrolled in UAN, FOM, or UC3M courses are typically graded on midterm and final examinations, class participation, and attendance. Some university classes may also require term papers, group projects, or class presentations. Others may have just one oral or written final exam. Most exams consist of written essays. Professors assign numerical grades based on a 10-point scale, which ºÚÁÏÍø911converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents.  The Spanish university system does not apply a grade curve system as in some US higher education systems; UAN, FOM and UC3M, students typically study consistently throughout the semester to pass a course successfully with the all-important final exam.

ºÚÁÏÍø911reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a pre-determined U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail†or “Audit†is not allowed for ºÚÁÏÍø911students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for ºÚÁÏÍø911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and ºÚÁÏÍø911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Course Information

Attending the ºÚÁÏÍø911pre-departure online orientation is important as we review the steps for your successful course registration. ºÚÁÏÍø911collaborates closely with the local host institutions to advise students during the in-country registration add/drop period. One of the indirect benefits of host institution classes is that ºÚÁÏÍø911students can learn how to collaborate with students from different cultural backgrounds, while expanding their own international job career network, and by gaining insight into the professional workings of a cross-cultural collaboration.

Students should send all course enrollment questions to CIEE, not the host institutions. Full instructions will be provided after they are accepted into the program.

The actual registration for UC3M courses happens during CIEE’s onsite orientation once students are in Madrid.
