Your ��911Summer Intern and Study Abroad program in Gaborone lasts 6 weeks and features three key components: A part-time internship with an international organization (15-20 hours per week), an internship seminar, and a 3-credit academic course taught online course through CIEE’s global academic partner, ASU. Housing & Meals

Housing

��911Gaborone offers diverse housing options to ensure you’re comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to single accommodation in an apartment style housing off campus, your accommodation preferences will be met.

Standard Housing: Includes a single room at a homestay. Homestays boast a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family and are located under 60 minutes from ��911Gaborone.

Select Plus Housing: Includes single airconditioned accommodation in a studio apartment with bathroom and kitchenette off campus about 15 minutes from ��911Center. Cleaning services available and included.

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees. 

Meals

Homestays: Students have breakfast and dinner with their host families and are responsible for lunch.
Apartments: Meals are not included. There are cooking facilities in the apartments. There are local restaurants and cafés 5 minutes away

Transportation

Commuting time from housing to your internship will depend on your internship provider's location.

Academics

��911Gaborone: Study on the campus of the University of Botswana, the first higher education institution established in the country. The campus is conveniently located within walking distance of Riverwalk Mall – one of the oldest shopping centers in Botswana – where you will find a movie theatre, plenty of restaurants, and shops. ��911Gaborone is situated on-campus where you will have access to a gym and computer labs.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by ��911in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 6-week sessions that fit within the ��911academic calendar.

Academic Culture

��911offers a focused and immersive experience for students, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning opportunities to deepen understanding of both academic subjects and the local culture.

��911courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The required internship seminar is a hybrid course, featuring both in-person sessions and online asynchronous activities.

In addition to lectures, most ��911courses often incorporate local co-curricular activities, providing students with firsthand exposure to the rich cultural heritage and diverse landscapes. These experiences not only enhance academic learning but also foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of the local context.

Attendance is mandatory in ��911courses. This emphasizes the importance of active participation and engagement in the learning process, encouraging students to fully commit to their academic pursuits.

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Students participate in a six-week ��911part-time in-person internship and required academic course taught in a hybrid learning environment, featuring both in-person class sessions and online asynchronous work.

��911classes are for ��911students only. Classes are small, typically with up to 15 students per class, and emphasize communication and work in small groups. Instruction is supported and augmented online with our learning management system, Canvas.

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 6-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other ��911courses begin or end.

Grading

��911reports all final course grades to students’ home institutions using a U.S. letter grade equivalent scale of A-F (ASU grade scale is A+ through E). For CIEE-administered courses, students’ grades are based on several different assignments and activities related to the academic course, including but not limited to: Engagement with the course materials, online participation forums, reflection papers, and written exams. In the context of internships, besides the specific deliverables outlined in the syllabus and the completion of 100-120 work hours, feedback from the internship supervisor is also taken into consideration. Internship supervisors and students each provide written evaluations of progress towards goals.

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for ��911students.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites; for ��911courses, these are listed in the syllabi below. Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and ��911staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
